“Every place wanted young people with experience and weren’t willing to teach them or give them a chance, so when I got the interview I was stoked!”
Moving from school to work can be difficult for young people experiencing disadvantage. Life challenges led Emily to leave school early. She became homeless and was out of work. “It was pretty horrible, but I tried to stay positive. I knew it wasn’t going to be forever,” Emily says.
Thanks to our Transition to Work program, Emily was given a six-month paid internship with social enterprise clothing store, HoMie. “I was absolutely over the moon! They are teaching me, and help and support me.”
Emily is now getting work experience, she has her confidence back and is enrolled in a social work course. “I want to use what’s happened to me to help others.”

The Brotherhood of St Laurence works to alleviate and prevent poverty in Australia.
Poverty is not just having too little money to live on. It can also mean being shut out from many other aspects of social and economic life that people commonly take for granted: a job, a home, and being connected to community.
Our programs and services provide education, training, employment and care to people experiencing disadvantage so that they’re able to live a good life. We also invest in research and advocacy to drive systemic change so that all Australians can enjoy economic security and social inclusion.
With your support this Christmas we can create lasting change for those most in need.
